As in most cases, the advice we have been getting is wrong. I mean, how many times have you hear this advice given out? I’m guessing most of your life. And things we hear over and over tend to stick with us. But just because something is being repeated doesn’t mean it’s right.
If you limit yourself to an amount of work you can comfortably handle you will never get ahead. I understand that you’re afraid to take on too much. That you don’t want to fail. But if you don’t take chances how do you expect to learn anything. Doing the same things over and over got you to where you are right now. If you want to stay there that’s fine, but if you want to grow there’s only one way. Challenge yourself with more than you can possibly handle.
Having said that, there are ways to do it intelligently. Filter your clients manage your time and build systems that will allow you to handle more than you do at the moment. How? It’s up to you. Some people don’t answer personal calls during work hours. Some communicate only through email. Some cutout meeting and lunches altogether. Are all of these right for you? Only you can know that. Try it out and see what works.
