The fine line between fans and haters

There’s a reason people don’t like ads, not just on TV but on the INTERNET, applications or anything else. Marketers go way overboard by trying to get you to pay attention to their message. Seth Godin keeps saying that marketers ruin everything and I have to agree with him. Make sure you don’t cross the fine line between fans and haters.

Take youtube for example, have you noticed that the volume of the commercials is a lot higher than the video you’re playing? Not to mention that you can’t skip some of them. Add to that the few commercials that keep playing over and over like the Oral-b (one that annoys me more than any other commercial).

I for one would be open to listening to them if they just listened to me.

What can marketers do?

They can listen to their audience. Display the commercial as you see fit, but make sure to ask for feedback. Is it too loud? Too annoying? Maybe your message is unclear? If you’re just going to assume you know what’s right for your audience you will do little more than eating your competition’s dust.
