There are only two things I can say for sure about SEO. One is that no one other than the google team knows what factors are important. And second, they keep giving out the wrong information when asked. SEO is divided into two part, on site, and off site.

On-site

This is where you focus on keywords, titles the length of the copy or anything else that has to do with your content. One factor no one takes into account but seems to be very important to google is your site’s age. The longer your site in online the better google will rank it, this is of course not the only factor so if you’re SEO is bad you still won’t be ranked high.

The reason most SEO agencies don’t talk about this is that you control this aspect. So long as you don’t take your site offline and keep working on it will perform better each year (you don’t need and agency for that).

On-site SEO is also relatively easy for you to learn and implement during the creation of your content.

Off-site

Off-site is where all the link building comes in, This is an SEO agency’s top priority. The better links they are able to get your site the faster it will rank high on google. My problem with other people doing the link building for you is that if they do something wrong your site is going to pay for it.

So, what should you do?

If you’re a small business owner don’t hire an SEO agency at all. Promote your site on social media, pay for some PPC and Facebook ads (it’s going to be a far batter use of your money). Come to terms with the fact that you don’t have to rank number one on google. You’re only job is to make sure your site gets more traffic every month.

With time your site will get ranked on all the search engines and you don’t have to worry about being penalized because you did nothing wrong.

Then who should hire an SEO agency?

Big business owners with a gigantic website, that put out 10 to 50 articles a day. The reason they should hire an agency is that to put out so much content you’re working with a few different sources and you need someone to go through them and make sure they are meeting the standard.
