The peace I found after breaking my smartphone

I’ll start by saying that I had an iPhone since the release of the 3gs. I don’t replace phones often and after that, I had an iPhone 4s and then 5s. After an incident with apple’s “customer support”, I decided to get rid of all my apple’s products. And took a Samsung Note 3 from my sister to try out android os.

Needless to say, it was a horrible experience. And I’m not talking about how slow it is, I don’t mind that. The os systematically disrupts workflow. You can mistakenly press a link and have to press back 4 to 5 times just to get back to where you were. Not to mention a number of notifications this phone has, you can’t put the phone in your pocket because it never stops vibrating. The phone was like anti-anger management, I’ve never been so pissed in my life.

This Friday on my way to visit my family I lost it. The phone started opening applications at random and was freezing every time I needed to use it. I got so mad I threw it on the pavement and it was finally dead. My first reaction was holy shit what am I going to do without a phone? For 20 minutes I was just shocked I did that. I just broke my phone on purpose, and I’m on my way to another city. Even worse I didn’t remember what apartment my sisters live in, they just moved and I know what floor they live on but the apartment number.

Suddenly I noticed that I feel really calm, I haven’t felt that calm in… I don’t think I ever did. Just the quiet of not being bombarded with notifications felt so good. So what if I don’t have a phone I’ll manage. I got there and spent the rest of the weekend without a phone and you know what? It felt good. Now I’m using an old Nokia phone and I’m not sure I’m ready to get another smartphone. I like that fact that the phone only rings when someone calls me.
