This has to be the most common mistake newbies make. And it doesn’t just affect websites, you will see it in brick and mortar stores, offices etc. And it comes from the fear that people are judging us on our appearance. We put way too much time, money and effort to look good. It might mean paying more for a professional website, Redecorating our office or buying a new car.
It’s good to respect ourselves enough to get cooler stuff but is the business even working? When we just start out we need to see if our business is viable. Are people reading your content? Are they buying your goods? Do they even understand your business’s concept? Until you can answer these questions every dollar you put into your appearance might as well be going down the toilet.
So how do you know when is a good time to invest in a new logo, office etc? Once you’re able to keep your head above water and make something extra. Let’s say that you need $5,000 to cover your expenses. You can start thinking of giving your business a makeover when you’re making $3,000 to $5,000 over that.
Why wait so long? You have to make sure that you’re making more than the renovations might cost you, just in case you have a bad month. You don’t want to have to worry about how to put food on the table just because of a new website, it just doesn’t make sense.
So what’s more important? The content. Your business and its ability to provide you with a steady cash flow is the most important thing.
By the way, if you see your competition starting off spending a lot of money on their businesses looks, don’t worry about them. They will be out of business before lunch.
