Nobody cares how old you are.

The myth of having to start off when you’re young is just that, a myth. While employers might be as dumb as a toast to hire just 20-year-olds, starting your own business has no expiration date. So what of you don’t know how to use Facebook or Twitter, you didn’t know how to drive and you learned that. Plus you have something those 20-year-olds don’t have.

You have experience. You know the difference between a shitty idea and a life-changing one. You know how the world works, you know that there are going to be ups and down because you’ve been there. So what if those 20-year-olds were born with a smartphone in their hands. They don’t have your experience.

So if you’re a 60-year-old woman that thinks you’re at the end of the line, wake up. You’re still here, and there are more opportunities today than there ever were. And guess what? Tomorrow there will be so much more.  Don’t just take my word, listen to Gary Vee.

Has anyone dumber ever done this before?

Too many of us are afraid to start something new, it doesn’t matter if it’s something big like buying a home or something small like trying out a new recipe. We fear failure on every level, but you have to ask yourself, has anyone dumber ever done this before?

In 99.9% of cases, the answer is yes. So there’s is no reason to be afraid to try. If someone less qualified than you has succeeded with a task there is no reason you won’t. And more times than not being shown that you dream can be a reality will just push you to work harder.

Jalisa Goodwin – Juice by Jah

I first ran across this video on Reddit, on the small business Ideas subreddit. I love the idea of people doing what they love. Too many of us are focused on how to make as much money as humanly possible. And I don’t think that’s the right approach. When hit with the reality of how hard it is to run a business most of us fold. Did you ever take a moment to think why that is?

On the other hand, people doing the things they love will always do better. Even when facing a challenge they will fight harder for their dreams. Because they have dreams and not just an excel sheet.

I think this is what we should all be doing, we should all be small business owners. We should all have the ability to control our future. And not have to worry about some new manager at work screwing everything up for us. Not having to worry about downsizing or any other corporate bull. We should all find something we love and live off that so we can spend more time with our families. I believe that in the long run, we would all be grateful that we did.

Good luck with your business Jalisa.

Make your own rules

Most people look to the rest of the world before making a move. The problem with that is the rest of the world might be wrong.

Just because everyone does it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea

We live in a world where everyone is copying everyone else, but sadly the person that is being copied doesn’t always know what to do. We see it everywhere in business, advertising, pricing, and sales method. If you decide to keep copying someone else the best you can ever do is become a poor version of him.

“If you study my game you enter my game. And I’m better at it than you.” -Marcelo Garcia

In the arena, you could clearly see that Marcelo Garcia knew what he was doing. In business you could be copying an idiot, do you really want to enter an idiot’s game?

What does making your own rules mean?

The first thing it means is that you have no competition. Even if there are thousands of businesses selling the same goods as you are, they are not you and there for can’t even compete with you. It means that you’re starting from zero and you have to find your own way. You check every step you make to find out if you could have done it better. You charge more because you’re worth more. And you find a way to make your business work no matter what.

Don’t fear failure, fear not trying. At your last moments, you don’t care about your mistakes, you regret the things you didn’t do.

You don’t need to copy anyone else. You have all the information you could ever need, just use it and carve your own path. No one can tell you that you failed because you can’t fail until you give up.

which job gets paid more?

Before I even answer this question you have to ask yourself if this question comes out of inexperience or fear. If it comes from inexperience then you just don’t know that you can make way more money working for yourself than for someone else (I’ll get into it in a moment). If this question comes out of fear then you won’t work for yourself no matter what, you’re looking for a safe employee life and this post might not before you.

For all the employees out there the job that pays the best will always be sales. I don’t care how long you’ve been a doctor or lawyer a salesman can take you on anytime. Unless you’re a salesman who converted to a lawyer, but that just an unfair advantage.

No one will ever pay you as much as you would pay yourself

Do you really think that anyone will pay you more than they pay themselves? I don’t care how good you are there will always be a limit on how much you can make as an employee, and that limit all always be less than you deserve.

Let’s assume that you’re a plumber. Working for a large company you can make only so much, you will work a lot but you won’t earn as much as you should. As a self-employed professional you will always make more money. Let’s take another example, a lawyer.

Everyone’s parents try to push them to become a lawyer or doctor, a lawyer is still easier than a doctor so let’s use that. The first year you can make about $140k (notice I said can make, no one ensures that). That’s $11,660 a month, sounds good, doesn’t it? You’ll be working long days and have no life till you make partner, that is if you make partner. Take that amount and split it to 24 working days a month, that’s $485.

Now let’s get back to the plumber, and average house call should be over $200 and a hardworking plumber can make about 5 or 6 house calls a day (I know because a good friend of mine is a plumber).

Should a plumber make twice as much as a lawyer?

No way. The only way this keeps happening is that you will never get paid as much as you can as an employee. By the way, if a self-employed plumber can make up to $1,200 a day how much do you thing a self-employed lawyer can make?

How long can it take you to build your brand as a self-employed professional?

It depends on how hard you’re willing to work, and how fast you learn. It sounds simple but then again life IS simple, we complicate it.

Get rich quick schemes are for morons

It always surprises me how many people fall for getting rich quick schemes. I don’t get it, do they think someone found a way to make a million dollars overnight and is sharing it with the world? Why would someone do that? Isn’t it better to just keep it to himself?

I’m not saying you can’t get rich fairly quick, in five to ten years. It’s quick enough considering most people don’t get there their whole life. But most people don’t want to put in the time, they want millions of dollars right now. That’s how snake oil salesmen make millions off selling real estate on the moon or a billion likes on your facebook page in 10 minutes. People need to wake up.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for

What is your dream? What are you willing to give in order to have it? I’m willing to bet you would give anything. Do you realize that you can have it? In today’s world, there’s nothing you can’t have, all you have to do is work for it. You want to live off the music you make, you can do that. You want to be an author, you can do that as well. You want to have a billion dollar company? It can be yours. Today we have possibilities our parents couldn’t even dream of, all we have to do is work for them.

How to start?

Dream. And dream big, don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Now that you have your dream, break it up into things you can do and things you can’t do. Start working towards your dream and trust that when you get to a point that you have to do something you can’t you’ll find a way to get the job done. Don’t believe me? Read ‘think and grow rich’ you will find countless stories of companies you know today. And every one of those owners didn’t know how he was going to build his dream, he just knew that he was going to do it.

Another tip I can give you is not to compete with the giants, but with yourself. Your monthly goal is to be better than you were last month.

If you knew that in the future you had everything you wanted and all you had to do is put in the work today, would you do it? I’m guessing you would. So decide that is your truth and fight for what you want, it’s the only way to get it.

I hope you found this post helpful, if so like it and share it with your friends. And while you’re at it, check out my ebook ‘level up your business’ a guide to starting your own business the right way.

Be week when you can and strong when you have to

When people think of a businessman they think only of the good parts. Like having money being in control of your time and buy yourself nice gadgets and cars. What they don’t see is the stress you have to deal with on a daily basis. You have to learn to moderate between being weak and being strong otherwise, you will break.

Power is not a single attribute it’s a collection of many. Your focus, determination, creativity or patients are limited each day. If you’re not careful you might spend them too quickly and when you need them you’re going to have to synthesize them. But it’s not the same, take synthesized focus for instance. It feels like you driving in a car without any gas, every inch feels like hell. And what about tomorrow? You feel spent before you even start.

I feel the same when I write. I’m not the type of person that can just sit down and write 15,000 words. I write only when I have something to say. So I might have days when I write posts for the next two weeks, and I might have days when I can’t focus on anything. But when you don’t allow yourself to be weak, how can you ever be strong?

I hope you found this post helpful, if so like it and share it with your friends. And while you’re at it, check out my ebook ‘level up your business’ a guide to starting your own business the right way.
