Flow start when you stop

Two brains are better than one, so it’s about time you learned how to use both of them. I’m talking about the left brain and right brain. The fact that they are the same organ says nothing about how they work. I don’t want to get too technical in this post I spoke about this subject before. In this post, I want to talk about flow.

What is flow?

I first heard of flow when I read ‘bold’. Steven Kotler calls the you’re peak performance state “flow”. He has a book called ‘the rise of superman’ all bout flow, a book that is still on my to do list (sadly there never enough hours in the day). Even though there are a few methods to trigger flow I would like to focus on one, stopping.

When you absorb information both sides of your brain pick it up, but you think with the left side, the slower side. The right side is so fast it thinks for you, but it’s not accessible when you’re using the left side. Robbin Williams had a point when he said the god gave man a brain and a penis but only enough blood to run one at a time. No matter how hard you try you can only work with one side of the brain.

So how do you switch gear?

It’s simple, stop what your doing. Meditate, take a walk, do the dishes, or whatever you have to do to stop thinking. As I said the right side thinks for you, and when you stop using the left side you will start getting a flood of answers. This is the point where you get ideas that might seem crazy to you.

I would advice you not to discard them, write them down so you don’t forget. And follow them through, at least in the planning stage. You would be surprised at how effective they can be.

The map is not the territory

The map is not the territory is one of the fundamental rules of NLP. It explains the difference between how we understand the world around us and what it’s really like. It’s no joke you really are living in a different reality.

When you see the world you see it through your filters, the experiences you had so far in life. That why the map (your perception or reality) will never be the territory (reality).

Why is this important

The practice of NLP is not meant to just allow you to understand yourself but to understand other people. The rules apply to everyone, so if you understand that people don’t see the world the way it is, you can understand where they are coming from when they disagree with you. They are simply using their perception of reality when they form their conclusion.

How does this serve you?

First and foremost, you understand that a disagreement is not necessarily personal. And understanding this point will allow you to ask questions you might have otherwise not asked.

Automatically we think that other people are using the same map we are and if something does not align with our opinions they must be wrong. This perception is ok for lower than average business owners but not for you, you can do better.

Instead of assuming the other person is wrong, try to understand his map, how does he see things differently? Approaching the issue from a different point of view will provide you with more data points. And might reinforce your point or show you where you were wrong.

Bottom line is that it doesn’t matter who was right and who was wrong, all that matters is that you make a profit. Don’t allow your ego lead you to lose money, you don’t pay your bills with ego.
